about the shala
in 2002, kristin leigh and barbara verrochi founded the shala, which
means home or abode in sanskrit, to create a place and community where—in the chaos of new york city life—people could practice yoga,
breathe and be at home in their bodies.
classes at the shala are a challenging, thoughtful blend of asana,
chanting and meditation. teachers focus on intelligent sequencing
in a vinyasa style format, emphasizing the connection between breath
and movement from asana to asana. this practice builds strength and
flexibility in the body and steadiness in the mind.
about kristin leigh and barbara verrochi
with more than 15 years of experience
each, the shala's directors, kristin leigh and barbara verrochi
are devoted yoga practitioners. barbara and kristin practice
ashtanga yoga daily with eddie stern and regularly travel to
mysore, india, to study with sri k. pattabhi jois.
they also study indian and buddhist philosophy, meditation,
sanskrit, music and dance, and are both jivamukti-certified
teachers.
they offer their gratitude to all of their teachers in these
areas and offer special thanks to sri k. pattabhi jois, eddie
stern, sharon gannon, david life, kevin gardiner, alison west,
maria rubinate, ruth lauer-manenti, and lisa schrempp for their
guidance and teachings of yoga.
barbara and kristin bring their yoga training, experience and
a sense of humor to every class.
